about

These improvisations capture the solitary intensity found after a long night at the club, based on visits to Rex Club when Chu lived in Paris in 2011. 'In Paris' reflects an experience after music, feelings when you trudge out of the club alone only to face a chilly and drizzly morning. It's achy and hungry, but your mind swells with ephemeral poignancy. You know that your feelings which seem so deep will later turn out trivial or lost, but this powerful stirring is one of the truly awesome gifts of the club because it keeps minds open. These sacred moments happen in the grey of early morning. The rest of society is alien and preset, as you deal with lingering intoxication.

For ten years, Chu has dreamed of recording this experience. Over sixteen tracks, he deconstructs a commercial house earworm into fragments and echos the impressionist history of France.

Mark Bo Chu is a multidisciplinary artist who exhibits paintings, writes and engages in scientific research. Many of his paintings depict scenes from dance music, and his research engages in multimodality, the study of how different senses and representations work together. Chu is an accomplished pianist, having recorded with the MSO and WASO as a soloist in his adolescence. Chu is also a past reviewer for The Good Food Guide.
